Assistance Sometimes Unsafe

When I fly there are often other disabled passengers on board. Alaska Airlines assistance boarding me, a wheelchair-bound veteran, is sometimes unsafe. This is due to airline staff lacking training, strength, and focus. Additionally, my wheelchair is frequently damaged in the cargo handling process. Familiarity with ACAA/ADA is spotty at best. Some personnel clearly are trained and capable at providing the assistance required to use the airline’s own equipment (E.G.aisle chair) while others are not.

Over the years, I have found that being my own advocate and thoroughly engaged in the boarding process improves results. I make a point of praising good performance and pointing out errors, especially those creating danger. I have recommended that the airline train its employees on procedures and equipment and then require those employees to practice; preferably on a supervisor.
